A little-known independent publisher called Malibu Comics released Malibu Sun #13.

Todd McFarlane's Spawn was the cover story.

Malibu was an early publisher for the Image Comics titles.

Spawn Comic was one of the titles launched by Image in 1992. It's one of the longest-running comic book series, still in print today.

Spawn is the creation of Todd McFarlane immediately after parting ways with Marvel.

The comic book has had its ups and downs over the years, but has cemented itself as a firm favorite with McFarlane fans.

Malibu Sun #13 is pretty scarce, but if you find one in nice shape then you have a fairly valuable comic book on your hands.

It's estimated that 98-99 percent of modern comic books, including Spawn comics, were direct to store editions without a UPC bar code.

Many collectors seek the Newsstand versions, as they are much harder to find, especially in high grade.

The most recent sale of a Newsstand 9.8 is over 3x the price of the regular edition. The record sale is 4x.

Most Valuable Spawn Comics With UPC Bar Codes (Newsstand Variants)

From Spawn #1 to Spawn #137, there were two types of each issue (not including variant comics).

1) Direct versions (sent directly to comic book stores); and

2) Newsstand versions (with a UPC bar code, intended to be sold at newsagents and other stores).

Newsstand editions are genuinely scarce, as very few modern age comics were sold from anywhere but comic book stores. Estimates (more like guesstimates) put the percentage at 1-2 percent of the complete print run.
