LEGO Train Sets Price Guide for 2025
The very first LEGO train was released in 1966, during the height of interest in all things toy trains.
Over the years, LEGO trains have varied from ones you moved by hand, through 4V, 9V and 12V battery versions with plastic or metal rails.
The company switched to radio controlled RC LEGO trains in 2006 to keep the cost of producing the tracks down.
They changed direction again with Technic trains, which could be converted to powered trains with additional items purchased separately.
Over the years, LEGO train sets have been themed to various characters and properties, including LEGO Thomas the Train, a LEGO Harry Potter train, a LEGO Christmas train series and a LEGO Disney train.
To bring LEGO trains into line with the LEGO City collection, and to create a like-for-like alternative to regular model train sets, LEGO expanded the train series with level crossings, stations and other buildings and accessories.
